The VRC SHAG single-handed race is happening this weekend (that is to say tomorrow, Sept 26). So far it looks like we have 7 boats registered. The forecast has improved from the earlier “biblical flood” rain to merely “light showers”, and both WindyTy and Big Wave Dave reckon there will be 5-10 knots of breeze from a generally southerly direction.
Guh. That was one of the most miserable on-the-water experiences I can recall in a long time. Light, flakey breeze. 120-degree wind shifts. Lumpy 2- to 3-foot leftover swell. Strong current. At least a dozen massive wind holes. And committee sent us to … Passage Island and back. With a 3:00 pm time limit. (Extended by 30 minutes if any boats finished!) I missed it by about 15 minutes.
The boats that retired were the smart ones. As for me, I’m gonna need therapy.
The only thing that comes close to today’s level of suffering was the 2019 VRC Summer Regatta, when they sent us to the Bell Buoy and back in light flakey breeze and massive current, and nobody finished. At least then there wasn’t leftover swell. So yeah, today was another overambitious VRC pain sandwich.
Nice to be out on the water though? I did see porpoises, so there’s that.
That was a great time; I remember being on Steller J, and we anchored… twice. Nothing like watching the whole fleet sailing their hearts out, and losing ground to the Point Atkinson Lighthouse.
